LN Birla Memorial Debate
The 17th L N Birla Memorial Debate, an inter-institutional event almost like an annual festival was held on the 11th of July 2016. After a grueling preliminary where reputed city schools were invited, eight schools qualified for the final event on the 11th July 2016. The Chairperson, Dr. Kunal Sarkar, an eminent Cardio surgeon introduced the topic – In the Opinion of the House – “The more educated we are, the less we learn” and as the contenders engaged themselves in this war of words, there was a lot of intelligent exchange and witty rejoinders keeping the audience in suspense.
The coveted first prize was lifted by Soham Chakraborty of Birla High School, the host school while the runner up was Joybir Dutta Gupta from La Martiniere for Boys.
Dr. Kunal Sarkar played his role as a Chairperson most effectively interspersing humour and wit to make the participants feel at home. The debate drew to a close with his complimenting this event as the “best organized” “best integrated” and “best debate”, he has witnessed among all debates held at the school level.
Career Counselling programme
Career Counselling programme for Classes XI and XII were held respectively on the 14th and 15th of July. The sessions were conducted by One Step up. The programmes on both the days were divided into two sessions. Mr. Shiv Dewan, the main resource person and his team covered a large number of career options involving all streams. Courses which are now in rage were discussed in great detail.
Neurology Seminar
A Neurology Seminar was attended by four students of Class XI, Spandan Banerjee, Nabhonil Chatterjee, Siddhant Panda and Moinak Paul along with their teacher, Dr. Arundhati Chakraborty of Biology Department on 19th July 2016. This was the third annual Satikanta Guha Memorial Science Discourse conducted by Professor Saleem Abdulrauf, a leading figure in the field of Neurosurgery.
Presentation on Low Carbon Lifestyles Students from Classes IX and X attended a presentation made by Mr Soumik Karmakar on Low Carbon Lifestyles, a much discussed topic and the demand of the day. The presentation very effectively made children understand ways to lead a carbon lifestyle, something that is good for the environment and cost effective too.
Inter House Elocution Competition 2016
The Inter House Elocution Competition 2016 including English, Hindi and Bengali Elocution was held on the 28th July 2016. The participants were divided into three categories. Group A comprised Class VI, Group B comprised Classes VII and VIII and Group C comprised Classes IX and X.
Pariwar Milan Award
Pariwar Milan Award for the best student from different schools was received by Pranav Dhupia of Class XII. He was given a memento, a certificate and was asked to speak on what being a good student entails. The award deserves special mention as it is titled Rashtriya Nirmata Samman and it recognizes the potential of student and at the same time enthuses him with a passion to build a better India.
International Exchange News
Fifteen students and two teachers from Kumming No 8 visited the school and gathered a tremendous experience of the activities pursued at school. They attended classes, and had a close look at the culture, food habits and family life of the Indians. The students who hosted the Chinese students put their best foot forward extending to them a warm welcome to make them feel at home.
