  • A report on funtakshri:-

    “FUNTAKSHARI  9”, a mastiful & musical Antakshari competition, based on Hindi Film Songs was held on Saturday, 10th September 2022 at Birla High School(Mukundapur). 

    The programme was anchored by Birla High School alumnus Mr Rajat Baid.

    18 prominent school alumni associations participated in this event: -

    The rounds were interesting and innovative Fabulous gifts, cash prizes, winners trophy, Audience questions with gifts were given.  An august gathering made the event a memorable one.

    In a close fight in the finals between six best teams, ALSOC emerged as Winners followed by STOPA. 

    The following dignitaries were present - Director Mukta Nain, Principal BHS Mrs Loveleen Saigal, Col. Bera, Director Sharmila Bose, Prinicipal Hira Prasad and many others including administration of BHS and SBGS. 

    The Alumni team of President Atul Churiwal,  Programme Convener Arun Kr Dalmia, Sushil Sethia, Sanjay Jain, Ashish Jhunjhunwala, Sachin Saraf, Anand Saraf, Gaurav Vasa, Rajat Baid, Amit Chirawala, Shailesh Ganeriwal, Mohan Goenka, Neeraj Choudhary, Kapil Shroff and other  members  were instrumental in its success.

    A Coffee Table Book Launch was organized by Birla High School Alumni on Saturday, 27th August, 2022 in the Centre for Performing Arts at Sushila Birla Girls’ School. This was a milestone event for Birla High School and first of its kind. The book shares glimpses of a memorable journey of not only our country’s progress but also Birla High School towards knowledge and wisdom through education. The coffee table book titled ‘Darkness to Light’ was released by the Chief Guest, Rear Admiral Rajeev Parlikar, a senior Alumnus.

    A motivational speech by Dr. Kumar Vishwas was organized by BHS Alumni on 7 th May, 2022 at the Science City Auditorium. The objective of the grand event was to mark the ongoing celebration of ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ organised by Birla High School Alumni as part of the 75 th year of Indian Independence. The students of Sushila Birla Girls’ School, Sri Shikshayatan, Haryana Vidya Mandir, JDBI College and Birla High School were present to hear the keynote address by Dr. Kumar Vishwas. The theme of his speech was ‘From Darkness to Light’. Throughout his speech he tried to instill within the youths who were present in the auditorium a nationalistic feeling which should break all barriers of caste, creed, religion and develop a pan Indian feeling. He spoke on various aspects of Indian history, culture, development, economy and reinstated the importance of mother tongue. He reminded the future citizens of the country about the traditions, culture and heritage of the country. He reminded the present that the onus of bringing in a new leash of life rests in the hand of the present and the future. He is hopeful that someday, India will emerge as one of the most powerful countries in the world.

    On the momentous occasion of 75 years of independence, Birla High School Alumni decided to look back at history and remember those who laid down their lives for the country.

    The Alumni organised a trip to the Barrackpore cantonment for Birla High School students on March 05,2022 to inspire patriotism in the children’s hearts and show them the place where the great Mangal Pandey had sparked the first war of Indian Independence in 1857.

    The Birla High School Alumni have always extended their helping hand in times of need. Birla High School Alumni in association with Kolkata Police has undertaken an initiative and is providing meals to 1500+ people. The entire initiative is spearheaded by Mr. Kapil Shroff of our Alumni. They are being supported by Santosh Chatwala, Singhi Bagan, in arranging for the cooking of the meals. Relief work started on the 22nd May 2021.  The target is to reach out to at least 3000+ people every day and support them in this hour of need. 

    With the effects of cyclone Yass felt in West Bengal, they arranged for dry food and dry cakes, courtesy of Om Namkeen and Choccywocky. They plan to provide ration to the needy as well. 

    For these initiatives they have partnered up with Kolkata Police, and are taking assistance from Ballygunj P.S., Alipore P.S., Chetla P.S., Parnasree P.S., Maidan P.S. and Kasba P.S.

    Covid-19 has taken the entire globe by a storm. Everybody is fighting with this pandemic so is India and we Indians Different countries have taken up measures to fight this pandemic .Lockdown was one such.

    Lockdown restricted community spread but also it made daily earner's livelihood very difficult. Many NGO's started community service so did Kolkata based Birla High School Alumni(BHSA). BHSA took a decision to start community service amid lockdown by serving food to the needy. The activity was supported by Alma Mater's Management, Governing Body Members, members of BHSA.

    BHSA in collaboration with Kolkata Police did the following activities.

    Relief work was started from 04th May. Metiabruz was the first area where ration was provided to more than 100 families of the migrant labourers.

    On 09th cooked food was provided in in Alipore around 700 people were served food. Garia, Similarly Charu Market, Sinthee, Chetla and in Sonarpur areas migrant workers were provided with meals.

    On 11th again Metiabruz migrant labourers were provided with meals.

    Further food distribution will be continued till 17th May and hope that we are able to reach out to the maximum needy people.

    There was an eye checkup camp held in Birla High School. Doctor came from hospitals to check eyes of students of classes 6 to 12. They used different types of instruments to check our eyes. We got to know how the excessive use of gadgets like T.V. and the mobile phones has damaged our eyes. I am happy that this eye checkup was held in our school.


    Birla High School Alumni organized FUNTAKSHARI 3 .... a mastiful antakshari competition, based on Hindi Film Songs, scheduled on Saturday, 3rd September 2016 at Vidya Mandir Auditorium. The winners were Sushila Birla Girls School Alumni ,they got a cash prize of Rs.15,000/- and a trophy and the first runners up  were Calcutta Parkers who got a cash prize of  Rs.10,000/- and a runners up trophy.

     


    Alumni Participation-2016 : Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp is a NGO serving under privileged section of society who are suffering with kidneyailment. The main activity of the organization is dialysis that too at unimaginable price. The objective is to serve the society. Apart from serving kss also wants to motivate their patients that they are at par with healthy one.

    Patients with kidney ailments who need twice or thrice a week dialysis loose a lot of motivation in life. They are surrounded by an external kidney in form of a machine as part of their life. 

    KSS organize a week long connect program - Khwahishen, wherein they conduct small games with the patients. The program ends up with a half day carnival - attended by patients, their family members, KSS members and their friends and families. 

     This year the event is on 24th Jan 2016.BHSA participated for the social cause.

     

    Alumni Participation :  STOPA (St. Thomas Old Pupil's Association) organised 1st Inter Alumni SwimmingCompetition on 17.05.2016 at Dalhousie Institute from 5 pm onwards where 10 eminent Alumni Associations of Kolkata participated. Birla High School Alumni took part in it and out was awarded the overall 2nd Runners Up Trophy along with bronze medals in Breast Stroke, Butterfly Stroke And Free Style Relay.

    EYE CHECK UP CAMP : BHSA organized 1st Eye Check camp for students of Class VI-X . The camp was organized in association with Priyamvada Birla Arvind Eye Hospital and was held in our school. Eyes of about 900 students were checked in two-day camp.The camp was held under the leadership of Sri Sushil Sethia and his team comprising Neeraj Chowdhury, Gaurav Vasa and Subash Sharma.

    DENTAL CHECKUP : A dental check up was conducted for the students of Class VI to  X under the initiative of Birla High School Alumni. Dr. Malika Bose and her assistant Ms Gargi Sinha  visited the school on 4  days from 27th July to 30th July  to check on the dental health of the students. The camp was held under the leadership of Mr Sanjay Jain and his team with lot of support from  Mr Neeraj Chowdhury.

    BLOOD DONATION CAMP :Alumni had organized its 2nd Blood Donation Camp in association with Belle Vue Clinic on 2 nd October 2015 at the  school premises. Mr Pradip Tandon, CEO of Belle Vue Clinic graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the event. Over 100 donors (which included teachers, staff, parents of present students, Alumnus and friends of Alumnus) attended the camp ,the number of successful donor was 86,rejections were due to medical reasons.

     

    BHS FAMILY ANTAKSHARI / FUNTAKSHARI Alumni association organised BHS Family Antakshari as it happens to be the Platinum Jubilee year of the school.It was held on 26th September at Vidya Mandir.The event saw 6 teams existing students,junior teachers,senior teachers,parents ,alumni members and alumni spouse team.The event was anchored by alumni member Rajat Baid.The winner team was senior teachers team.It was enjoyed by all.The latter half saw a total of 17 Alumni Associations participating with a Three-Member team each. The antakshari was based on Hindi Film Songs. There were 3 Semi Finals of 6 teams each wherein interesting rounds, including an audio-visual round, were played in each semi final. The teams were engrossed and fought hard to gather maximum points. The best 6 teams based on accumulated points made it to the Finals.The winners were host team Birla High School Alumni.

     

     

    SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY : This year also on 8th February your alumni along with Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp, an NGO serving under priviledged section of the society suffering from kidney ailmets, participated in Khwahishen, a half day carnival for the patients & their family members to bring smile on their faces and motivate them towards a normal life.

    BHSA BENEVOLENT TRUST : This year also the trust has given financial support to some of our old retired teachers.

    INTER ALUMNI ACTIVITIES : You alumni, along with many other Alumni of Kolkata, participated in a host of Inter Alumni activities.

    FOOTBALL : CBSOBA (Calcutta boys) organised an Inter Alumni Football Tournament on 3rd Aug 2014 at the Calcutta Press Club Grounds. Each team had 5 players and our Alumni was represented by Pankaj Bhutoria, Devesh Vasa, Nikhil Jhanji & other alumni members.

    QUIZ : On 2nd Nov 2014, ALSOC organised it's 6th All India Open Quiz at the Xavier Hall. Our Alumni represented by Mr. Kinshuk Biswas, Mr. Aditya Bagree and Mr. Kishalay Banerjee took part in the above event and stood victorious among 25 other participating alumnis.

    DEBATE 2014 : On 22nd November, 2014, the alumni association of La Martiniere- ALMA organized an inter alumni debate at the millennium hall of La Martiniere for girls. Alumni associations of seven schools participated in the debate. The topic of the debate was “ The most beautiful things in life are the most useless”. Representing Birla High School Alumni were Nikhil Bothra & Soumosekhar Gangopadhyay. In the end, after a gruelling session of debating, ALSOC was declared the winners and Birla High School were the Runners up.

    Best 6 teams based on accumulated points made it to the Finals. South Point Ex Students Association (ASPEXS) were winners, followed by Association of La Martiniere Alumni (Alma) (1st RUNNERS UP), and Alumni of Apeejay Schools, Kolkata (ALOAK) (2nd RUNNERS UP)
